Utmost Purpose Goals

Mission and Educational Objectives

Our department's core mission is to strengthen students' linguistic expertise and practical language skills, broadening their academic horizons with a modern, international perspective. We aim to cultivate both applied language professionals and Chinese academic researchers, while also preserving Chinese culture and enriching the nation's humanistic resources.

In terms of curriculum design, we emphasize a dual focus on classical and modern studies, alongside academic rigor and practical application. This approach guides students to apply theoretical knowledge, ensuring that classical and traditional wisdom remain vibrant and relevant within contemporary thought. Our instruction involves a thorough study of classical texts—such as canonical works, historical records, philosophical treatises, and literary collections. Through this, we guide students to appreciate the subtleties of the Chinese language and characters, exploring the essence of meaning, rhetoric, textual criticism, and statesmanship. By employing diverse academic perspectives, students not only gradually grasp the core of traditional Chinese scholarship but also extend their understanding to contemporary literary works, integrating linguistic content with current linguistic trends. This actively prepares them to meet the new challenges facing Chinese culture in the 21st-century global landscape.

Although our department has undergone several changes and mergers, we have always strived to be a Department of Chinese Language and Literature with a clear and upright mission, committed to rigorous and practical teaching and research.
