In order to effectively use of national education resources, enhance the quality of tertiary education, and pursuit outstanding development of university. Government is aggressively promoting integration of university. Under the premise, NHLUE and NDHU were merged in 2008. The new name of the university was NDHU.
Department of Chinese Language and Literature were combined with Meilun campus, Shoufeng campus and Institute of Folk Literature. The process was finished in 2010, so our department is not only has long history but brand new appearance.
A brief introduction of three departments established in sequence.
Meilum Campus
Established in 1987, was a historic school. Government resumed Taiwan Province Hualien Normal School, and renamed it as Hualien Teachers college in 1999. Language Education department was founded to training great elementary teachers. So our department is simple, honest, conscientious and careful. We are focused on students’ basic language ability, to be particular about cultural courses and training in manner. So we can provide excellent teachers with great artistic appreciation to go into elementary school and take responsibility to educate elementary students.
In 2003 renamed it as Department of Chinese and Literature Education, and added M.A. program in 2005. Since the multi-teacher cultivation generation is coming, Hualien Teachers college was renamed as National Hualien University of Education in 2005. School divided in four colleges, College of Humanities and Society, College of Education, College of Science and College of Fine Arts. Our department is part of Humanities and Society College. In the same year, Department of Taiwan and Regional Studies divided from our department. In 2006 renamed it as Department of Chinese Language and Literature. From now on we started to change our department from teacher cultivation to normal Chinese department. Since emerged of the school, and well recognized. We temperately renamed our department as Department of Chinese Language and Literature (Meilum Campus) and discuss affairs of department after emerged.
Shoufeng Campus
Founded in 1996, and added Ph.D. and M.A. program in 2000. Broaden international vision, noble humanistic ideal and exact teaching attitude are our policies.
We combined theory with practice, classic with modern and going through Chinese and Western culture. We are engaged to respond contemporary cultural situation, so that the traditional studies have been able to show great vigor and vitality. Courses are designed to comprehend the classical literature and modern literature. We expected our students to think and face of internationalization, localization and diversity of academic trend, and can apply what they learned. Let knowledge combined with reality, chasing truth and goodness. Although we focused on literature but we still not overlook some original courses. Language and ideology culture are complementary to each other, as an aim of our research.
Graduate School of Folk Literature (Original NHLUE Graduate School of Folk Literature)
Established in 1998, was the first Graduate School of Folk Literature and both have Ph.D. M.A. program. We aim to collect, develop, research, and promoted the folk literature, so that exalt traditional culture and to encourage mutual communication.
Chinese folk literature, Taiwan folk literature and comparative folk literature are our main research field. We published our research periodical regularly; held seminars learning camp, and continued exchanged the research with every folk literature institute.
Since the emerged of the university, Graduate School of Folk Literature was combined with Department of Chinese Language and Literature and renamed it as Department of Chinese Language and Literature Folk Literature Ph.D. program and M.A. program. We hope this change can bring us brand new appearance.
Summary
The first semester of 2010, the department was formally named as National Dong Hwa University, Chinese Language and Literature Department.
The department includes a Bachelor program, three M.A. programs and two Ph.D. programs. We believe our outstanding professor lineup could hold the core value of Chinese Department, open the new vision of Chinese academic.
